Free Policy Review

Already own an annuity or a life policy?

Most people bought one, filed the paperwork, and haven't looked at it since. We'll go through it with you and tell you plainly what you have, including when the answer is "this is fine, leave it alone."

Takes about half an hour. Nothing to sign.

Why Review It

What can change after you buy

A policy you bought ten years ago was set up for your life back then. Here are four things that can go out of date.

Your beneficiaries

Beneficiary designations override your will. An ex-spouse, a deceased parent, or a child who wasn't born yet when you signed. Whoever is on that form is who gets paid. This is the most common problem we find, and the easiest to fix.

Your surrender period

Surrender charges usually decline to zero after a set number of years. Plenty of people are still treating money as locked up when it hasn't been for years.

Your caps and rates

Caps and participation rates on indexed products can be changed by the carrier after you buy. What you were quoted at the start may not be what you're getting now. Few people ever check.

Whether it still fits

A policy bought for growth at 48 is doing a different job at 63. It might still be the right thing. It might be doing something you no longer need.

What We Do

What a review covers

Plain answers to the questions people can't get from a statement.

  • What you own. The type of product, what it's designed to do, and which of the numbers on your statement is real money versus a value used only to calculate income.
  • What it costs you each year. Rider charges, cost of insurance and administrative fees, shown as figures.
  • What you can take out, and what it would cost. Where you are in the surrender schedule and what the penalty-free amount is.
  • What happens when you die. Who receives what, under which option, and whether the beneficiary form still says what you'd want it to.
  • Whether the guarantees you were sold are still there. Some are contractual. Some were assumptions on an illustration. They are not the same thing.
  • Whether it's worth changing. Including the cost of changing, which is often the reason not to.

When we'll tell you to keep it

Often. Replacing a policy can mean a new surrender period, new charges, and losing benefits you can't get back, especially on older contracts with terms carriers no longer offer. If what you have is doing its job, the right advice is to leave it alone, and that's what you'll get.

Come Prepared

What to bring

Bring what you can find. Missing something isn't a problem. We can usually request it from the carrier with your permission.

  1. 01

    Your most recent statement

Annual or quarterly. It has the values and often the rider charges.

  2. 02

The original contract, if you have it

The thick booklet you filed away. The surrender schedule and guarantees live in there.

  3. 03

    Any illustration you were shown

Useful for comparing what was projected against what actually happened.

  4. 04

    Your questions

Especially the ones you felt awkward asking whoever sold it to you.
